How to apply for Universal Credit ?

Step 1: Check Eligibility

Before applying, make sure you're eligible. You usually qualify if:

  • You're on a low income or out of work

  • You're 18 or over (some exceptions for 16–17)

  • You and your partner have less than £16,000 in savings

  • You live in the UK

  • You're not already getting certain other benefits

Step 2: Gather the Information You Need

Before starting the application, have the following ready:

  • National Insurance number

  • Email address

  • Phone number

  • Your bank, building society, or credit union account details

  • Details about your housing (rent, landlord, etc.)

  • Income details (pay slips, benefits, pension)

  • Savings, investments, and debts

  • Childcare costs (if applicable)

  • ID (passport, driving licence, etc.)

Step 3: Create a Universal Credit Account

Go to the official Universal Credit application page:

  • Click "Apply now"

  • Create an account with a username and password

  • You'll need to verify your identity (you can use GOV.UK Verify, passport, or driving licence)

Step 4: Fill Out the Online Application

  • Log in to your account

  • Complete all sections honestly and accurately

  • Declare your income, savings, housing, childcare, etc.

  • Submit your application

You usually have 28 days to complete the full application once you start.

Step 5: Book an Interview (Universal Credit Phone/Work Coach Call)

  • After submitting, you’ll be told to book and attend an interview with a Work Coach

  • This can be over the phone or in person at the Jobcentre

  • You’ll discuss your circumstances and agree to a Claimant Commitment

Step 6: Wait for Your First Payment

  • You’ll usually receive your first payment about 5 weeks after applying

  • You can request an advance payment if you need money sooner (you’ll pay it back over time)

Step 7: Keep Your Journal Updated

  • Use your Universal Credit account to:

    • Report changes (e.g., income, rent)

    • Communicate with your Work Coach

    • Submit job applications and commitments
